About the Debut Novel
This novel represents a stunning timeline, and a course of events which connects Australia’s modern military experiences with its 19th-century colonial ancestry. And, in writing Afghani, Brendon has bridged the gaps between these worlds through an often Laugh-out-loud—but often jarring—narrative that strips off the bandaid which masks an intergenerational wound.
Brendon’s novel takes you on two parallel journeys:
First, there is Patterson, a young and naive Australian Army recruit whose innocence is challenged, not only by the realities of war, but also by the failures of military command.
Then there is George Sher Gul, an Afghan cameleer seeking a new life in the Australian outback.
These intertwined stories weave a unique tapestry which explores how cultural differences both divide and unite a nation’s history, and how resilience shapes our identity across generations.
About the Author
Brendon Patrick brings a unique perspective to his storytelling.
As both a retired Australian soldier who served in Afghanistan and Timor-Leste, and a descendant of the Afghan Muslim Cameleers, Brendon writes from a place of personal connection and historical curiosity. His debut novel is a passionate exploration of his heritage and military experience through a minimalist prose.
