Brisbane Author’s Novel: AFGHANI to be Recognised by Royal Geographical Society of South Australia
BRISBANE, QLD (December 2025): Independent author Brendon Patrick will present his novel, AFGHANI to the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia on December 9, 2025, at 12:30 PM. This marks a significant recognition of the work’s historical and cultural importance to Australia’s migrant history.
AFGHANI draws a powerful link between Australia’s colonial exploration and its modern identity. The story weaves fiction with real historical figures which are preserved in the Society’s archives.
Through dual timelines, Patrick recreates the historical journey of George Sher Gul—an Afghani Cameleer—in a parallel format with a modern storyline set during the more recent conflict in Afghanistan.
But Patrick’s work doesn’t just illuminate previously under-explored aspects of Australian migrant history and the vital contributions of Afghani cameleers, it also uncovers the lesser-known fragments of modern-day Australian contributions to global warfare.
“This recognition from such a prestigious heritage institution is deeply meaningful,” says Brendon Patrick. “South Australian State archives were instrumental in my research, and I’m honoured to return a creative work that brings these historical figures to life for contemporary readers.”
The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia, founded in 1885, houses one of the most significant collections of historical exploration documents in Australia and continues to promote geographical education and research.
Patrick’s presentation represents an unusual path for an independent author, with a major heritage institution recognising the novel’s contribution to Australia’s historical narrative and cultural understanding.
